What it means

A post, page, menu or widget on this site links to an address on this site that answers "not found", or to a page that is no longer published.

Paul Bunyan Professional finds these with its broken links scan. It checks links to your own site only; links to other websites are not checked.

Usual causes

  • A page or post was deleted, moved to the trash or unpublished, and other pages still link to it.
  • A page's address (its slug) changed, and links written with the old address were not updated.
  • A link was typed by hand with a mistake.
  • A menu item still points to a page that no longer exists.

What to do

Open Paul Bunyan > Broken links. It names the page the link is on and usually suggests where it should point. Replace fixes the link in the post and keeps an undo copy.

Replace changes only that exact address where it is the whole value of a link, or of the address saved in a block's settings. Text, and other addresses that only end the same way, are left alone. Undo puts the page back as it was, as long as nobody has edited it since.

How to check the fix

Press Scan now on the Broken links screen. A fixed link no longer appears in the list.
